Decoding the Art of Makeup: What Sets a Great Makeup Artist Apart
In my opinion,
In the world of makeup artistry, the key to a truly exceptional makeup experience lies in a harmonious blend of personalization, expertise, and a shared vision between the artist and the client. As a seasoned makeup artist with seven years of industry insight, I'm here to shed light on what distinguishes a good makeup artist from the rest.
Clarity is Key
Before you even book a makeup artist, it's crucial to have clarity on two fundamental aspects. Firstly, define the style of makeup you desire. Even if words fail you, visual inspiration, such as photos showcasing your dream look, creates a seamless transition from imagination to application. Let’s create fluidity from “what’s in your head”, to what goes on your face! Secondly, thorough research of different makeup artists' portfolios and social media accounts ensures alignment between the artist's skill level and your envisioned outcome.
The Art of Personalization
Trends may come and go, but a timeless look tailored to you is what truly matters. What truly sets a makeup artist apart is their ability to personalize your look. Beyond the TikTok trends and viral techniques, a skilled artist considers your natural features, skin type, and color harmonies. Copying a look could be ok for a 17 year old with perfect skin, but as we age and lose volume, color and structure in our faces, we need to use color and placement to enhance. It’s not about “doing a look”, it’s about correcting and enhancing to merge your unique beauty with the makeup.. Aging is a factor, and a good makeup artist adapts products, colors, and techniques to suit changing skin needs.
The Interview Process
Prepare to be interviewed! A good makeup artist will ask questions, delving into your preferences and bringing up details you may not have considered. Questions about your everyday beauty routine, comfort with eyeliner, preferences for blush/bronzer/contour, and details about your event help shape a customized approach. It's all about understanding your comfort level and ensuring your makeup aligns seamlessly with your personal style. Some examples include:
What is your everyday beauty routine? This will give me insight on how MUCH makeup to apply. If a prospective client wears makeup everyday, that tells me that they are comfortable with makeup and will probably be ok with more makeup for their event.
Are you comfortable wearing eyeliner? Do you like eyeliner on the top lash line and the bottom? Do you prefer a smudged or sharp line? How long of a wing do you like? Do you want eyeliner around the entire eye/outer half/outer third. Remember, there are may styles and types of eyeliner (and if you say one that won’t work or look good on your eye shape... I will make a suggestion).
Do you want blush/bronzer/contour? Even if I think they need any of these things, it’s good to understand how the prospective client feels about cheek color. I have found that this can be very divisive!
Where is your event? When is your event? How long is your event? This tells me what type of lighting you will be in, the weather (I don’t want your makeup to melt!), and helps me adjust the type of skincare, foundation and setting technique.
Realism and Honesty
A great makeup artist is not afraid to deliver the truth. They offer honest opinions on what will and won't suit you, ensuring a realistic and flattering outcome. Whether it's advising on the most suitable foundation coverage for longevity or suggesting adjustments based on your unique features, transparency is key.
Creating a Safe Haven
Above all, a great makeup artist cultivates an environment of safety, comfort, and empowerment. Your experience should leave you feeling not only beautiful but confident in the expertise and honesty of your chosen artist.
Safety on Both Sides
Safety also extends to the artist, and a good artist will ensure that there are contracts and documents in place to make sure that both the artist and the client are in accordance. This commitment to professionalism and clear communication sets the stage for a seamless and secure collaboration.
In the realm of makeup, it's more than just an application—it's a collaborative journey toward enhancing your natural beauty. Choose a makeup artist who not only understands your vision but crafts an experience that makes you feel seen, heard, and stunningly beautiful. After all, the art of makeup is not just about what goes on your face but the transformative journey it takes you on.
