Get Comfortable with a New Makeup Look
When I worked at a makeup counter, my clients would often come in with a desire to discover a new look for themselves—but what we all really look for when we go buy makeup is to FEEL different. Changing your makeup look is a super easy and affordable way to feel like a new version of yourself!
I don’t think any of us in the industry are surprised at the boom of makeup sales during the pandemic. We are all looking to feel better—calm, happy, or refreshed. Makeup and skincare are simple ways of achieving that on a day to day basis…if you let it.
Some of us are like chameleons- always looking to change and update our personal style and look depending on how we feel. The rest of us get so comfortable with the way we see ourselves in the mirror, that, even when we attempt something new, we wipe it off….take it off…and go back to the old. But believing that we can adapt to change is the first step in trying something new.
Take Small Steps Towards Change
Take lipstick, for example, it’s all about taking baby steps in the direction of what you want to achieve. If your goal is to rock a red lip, start with a tinted lip balm or a lip stain that is one to two shades deeper than your natural color. Once you start to feel comfortable with that, try applying a bright lipstick with a light hand— by blotting it on and then pushing in the lip color onto your lips with your fingertips for a more effortless vibe. Once that feels comfortable in a week or two, try wearing the lipstick opaquely.
Small increments make change doable for creatures of habit. A great product that works for each look is Danessa Myrics Colorfix, which is a versatile long wearing cream-pigment that can be manipulated as a stain by mixing with chapstick, as a wash of color by using a small amount and applying with a fluffy brush, or opaquely for full-on color impact.
What about colored products? Like a colorful eye look? I’ve heard many friends and clients tell me that they love colorful eyeshadow, but they can’t do it. Why can’t they do it? If it’s not the technique and it’s definitely not the lack of products out there, it must be the discomfort of the newness.
For a colorful eye, I recommend starting with a pop of color. This can be done in many ways! You can even use colors that are closer to earth tones, which will help the look feel more “natural” for you. A pop of color can be added to the center of the eye, and if you choose a contrasting color to your eye color you will get the added bonus of a brighter, bigger and more wide-awake eye.
Other options are: lining the waterline with a colorful eyeliner, tracing the lash line with a colorful eyeliner, adding a flick with a colorful eyeliner gel. Try the entire Danessa Myrics Colorfix collection for an endless array of colors and possibilities.
