Why Being Yourself is the Most Powerful Beauty Tool
In this line of work, I’ve met all different types of interesting people with fascinating stories and unique faces. You never know who you will meet or what their expectations are! Something that I notice in all my clients (and all people really) is that, we just want to feel accepted, empowered and loved for who we are. Some clients want a lot of makeup, some prefer a more natural look—but, all of us want to feel good in our own skin.
2020 has proven to be chaotic and unlike any other year we’ve experienced. Lots of us have lost loved ones, jobs and, even, ourselves… slowly slipping into depressive episodes from the lack of social interaction or anxiety, then looking in the mirror and not recognizing the person looking back. I’ve felt like that, and still feel like that sometimes. A swipe of lipgloss, some mascara and brow gel helps boost my mood and carryon… but telling myself, every time I look in the mirror, how intelligent, beautiful and deserving I am of good things has been the #1 way I’ve been able to change the way I see myself. Step 1: radical self acceptance; Step 2: radical self love.
Doing everything out of LOVE is a value that drives me. So even though makeup is important, and the way I make money, I believe that positive self-talk and self-acceptance is the most important tool in my kit. Imagine how beautiful we could all be if we loved ourselves and each other in all our differences, and also wore fun lipstick? To me, a job well done isn’t just about the finished look or a photograph, but if the client or model feels good about themselves.
Something we can all agree on is that 2020 has been a weird year. But I’ve also seen some pretty amazing things happen too. This year we’re seeing some exciting brands launch into the makeup space who share the messaging of radical self-love. First it was Patrick Starrr with ONE/SIZE. Now—Rare Beauty, a super inclusive brand based on the idea that we “don’t need makeup”. Rare Beauty encourages its shoppers how to feel by using positive messaging with products that are consciously named like Blessed, Heroic and Fearless.
Remember, you are beautiful already— makeup just amplifies it.
